School

On May 1, 1884 Leo XIII set up a «Scuola speciale di Paleografia e Critica applicata» to provide «the young clergy» with a valid tool to become versed in historical criticism thanks to their understanding and knowledge of documents. The school was created over one hundred years ago and has trained entire generations of researchers studying disciplines of diplomatic history. Today it runs various specialised courses that combine the theoretical aspects of the different disciplines with practical sessions on the original documents in the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano.
Further information can be found on the Vatican School of Palaeography, Diplomatics and Archives Administration website.
